Shane Gahagan joined Sapphire Solutions as a Senior Expert specializing in strategic leadership. He has been a part of the team since July 22nd, 2024. Sapphire Solutions, a subsidiary of AVIAN, LLC provides senior-level expertise to the government and diverse industries. As a retired Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, Shane has vast knowledge and experience with Tactical Aircraft Programs, Naval Air Systems, and leadership. With 35-plus years of expertise in the Navy, Shane is an integral part of the team.
Shane developed a passion for leadership in his first job in the United States Navy and continues to carry that passion at Sapphire Solutions. One of Shane’s favorite aspects of leadership is chasing goals that haven’t been achieved. Shane does this by applying a generative approach that fosters an environment where people feel value and create value. When a culture is created around valuing others, it increases the probability of success. According to Shane, nurturing an environment like this takes longer than a few months, it can take 2 to 3 years to get it fully running. He dedicates time and effort to building trusting relationships to create raving fans. To build this valued culture you must live it yourself as a leader. Shane has expertise in practicing this every day and using this knowledge to help other programs.

1. What attracted you to Sapphire Solutions?
“I was approached by Sapphire senior leadership in the development of generative-type organizations with the goal of improved execution. I had been involved in participating in creating an innovative approach to organizational execution that relied on creating non-negotiable mission alignment, behavior and mental model changes, and holistic buy-in from all stakeholders. Sapphire Solutions provided an avenue to continue the effort of continuous improvement and potentially shape outcomes.”
2. How do you apply the characteristics of attentiveness, accessibility, and adaptability at Sapphire Solutions?
“In Sapphire Solutions’ work, we pursue an approach to be mindful of mission alignment. One trap that all organizations, from time to time, fall into is forgetting what they are trying to accomplish. Day-to-day activities tend to distract from taking steps toward mission accomplishment. With a level of influence, it is important to be available and focus on core principles in an evolving environment.”
3. How do you enact the AVIAN principles of doing the right thing, creating raving fans, making it easy for them, and getting it done?
“We help organizations find alignment on the mission requirement with all stakeholders and build an executable plan. We strive to build mission efforts that are devoid of non-productive conflict, avoid a compliance mentality, and create an environment of passionate commitment to the effort. This will lead to a more open, transparent, and brutal facts discussion with a foundation of ground truth and ensure every outcome and decision is a linear step directly to mission accomplishment.”
Outside of his professional pursuits, Shane is deeply committed to his family. He enjoys spending time with his wife, their four adult children, and three grandchildren. He places high value on maintaining strong family relationships and creating lasting memories together. In his leisure time, Shane is an avid golfer and has recently developed an interest in sailing. This new pursuit has been especially meaningful, as his wife, who grew up sailing, has become his sailing partner. Together, they enjoy exploring new waters, combining her lifelong experience with his enthusiasm for learning, making sailing both a rewarding hobby and a shared journey.
