Lexington Park, Md. — At AVIAN, leadership is built with intention—through hands-on experience, continuous learning, and the support of a strong professional community. This dedication to employee growth and career development is exemplified by the AVIAN Leadership Development Program (ALDP), a 12-month, cohort-based initiative designed to equip motivated professionals with the tools, knowledge, and attributes essential to effective leadership.
Launched in 2021, ALDP was created to cultivate AVIAN’s next generation of leaders by providing mid-career professionals (career levels 3, 4, and 5) with interactive training, expert-led workshops, and real-world challenges. The program serves as a catalyst for employees passionate about making an impact and advancing in their leadership journey.
This May, AVIAN proudly celebrated the graduation of its fourth ALDP cohort, reaffirming the company’s commitment to leadership development and organizational excellence. The eight members of Cohort 4—Janet Nicholson, Emily Walter, Jenn Randazzo, Joshua Porter, Nicholas Kern, Amber Lynch, Devontae Casey, and Sarah Grumbine—dedicated the past year to elevating their strategic problem-solving, leadership skills, and cross-functional collaboration.
“Each year we have an incredible group of folks participate in our leadership development program and this year is no different,” said Tara Strickland, Vice President of Employee Experience. “This cohort asked great questions and challenged themselves to think beyond their norms, pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a leader. I cannot wait to see what great things they continue to do in their careers.”
Throughout the program, participants delved into key business areas, including finance, human resources, operations, ethics, business development, and communications. They engaged with AVIAN leaders and industry experts, participated in leadership coaching, and completed a capstone project that allowed them to apply their learning in practical, forward-thinking ways.
For their capstone, Cohort 4 explored the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into AVIAN's operations to support the company's ongoing evolution and enhance the employee experience, all while preserving AVIAN's people-first culture. The cohort conducted a comprehensive needs assessment, evaluated emerging technologies, and developed a strategic roadmap for implementation. They presented recommendations to AVIAN’s leadership team, addressing:
This capstone project provided a platform for the cohort to demonstrate critical leadership behaviors—strategic thinking, effective communication, financial planning, and collaborative decision-making—drawing on all aspects of the ALDP curriculum.
"As a continual improvement organization, it's important that we continue to prioritize the things that make us more efficient and increase internal and external customer satisfaction," said Robin Gatton, Senior Director of Quality at AVIAN. "This project feels extremely important as I see the potential for this to set off some breakthrough improvements within the organization that will move the needle in how we do business."
Completion of ALDP provides a strong foundation for future success and supports AVIAN's mission to foster a culture of growth, innovation, and leadership from within.
Congratulations to Cohort 4 graduates on this milestone achievement!
